Partial Hospitalization Program for Substance Abuse

When considering a mental health or addiction treatment program in Los Angeles, you will see there are many different treatment options to meet your care needs. When researching programs online, you will find common options such as residential, intensive outpatient (IOP), partial hospitalization, and outpatient mental health treatment programs. It can become difficult to sort through the possible alternatives to determine which treatment model and level of care best suit your treatment needs.

Although residential or inpatient care is highly beneficial in many instances, the level of care provided in the inpatient (residential) setting may be more intensive than required to address your recovery needs and help you achieve your recovery goals. For some mental health and substance use disorder treatment needs, a partial hospitalization program (PHP) or “day program” may offer effective mental health and addiction treatment in an environment without a residential component.

Understanding Treatment

What is Partial Hospitalization?

Partial hospitalization programs may have different names depending on the treatment center and the specific program details. Sometimes they are called day programs or PHPs. Some addiction and mental health treatment facilities incorporate them into a comprehensive outpatient level of care. However, not all outpatient levels of care provide the same treatment intensity you might expect (or need) from a partial hospitalization program.

PHPs provide intensive treatment for addiction and behavioral health issues without requiring overnight or extended stay at a drug rehab center. Our partial hospitalization program near Los Angeles offers the same level of therapy and therapeutic options you would expect in a residential setting. However, choosing a PHP allows you to remain engaged in family or work obligations. Depending on the specific program, you might be expected to participate in individual or group therapy sessions five (or more) days a week. Sometimes, therapy sessions may last up to eight hours a day.

Again, depending on the intensity of your specific program, therapy sessions are generally a combination of individual and group therapy arrangements. A partial hospitalization program is sometimes better suited for those who have not experienced severe addiction or mental health symptoms or who have never been through a treatment program before. If you have completed a substance use disorder treatment program and have experienced relapse, at least at first, an inpatient setting might be better suited to your treatment needs. Also, partial hospitalization programs are intensive and highly structured.

Suppose you do not show signs of improvement or do not attend treatment sessions. In that case, your treatment professionals may refer you to a residential treatment program to complete intensive therapy before transitioning to a PHP or IOP (intensive outpatient program).

What's the Difference Between PHP & IOP Treatment?

It’s important to know whether our partial hospitalization program is Los Angeles is the right program for your treatment needs. At first glance, intensive outpatient and partial hospitalization programs may seem like the same. Both help patients seeking to overcome addiction and mental health challenges the opportunity to seek treatment without the costly component of living on-site at a treatment center. This ensures that those with family or work obligations can still get the help they need without sacrificing the freedom and independence they need to remain an active part of their day-to-day routines.

Also, both program models give patients access to intensive treatment options. Whether you choose an IOP or a PHP for mental health, you can expect open access to medical and mental health professionals who can provide support, guidance, and medication assistance if needed. Perhaps the treatment program’s intensity level is the most significant difference between a partial hospitalization program (PHP) and an intensive outpatient program (IOP). PHP programs provide mental health treatment that is more intensive than an intensive outpatient program. However, the level of care offered at a PHP is less intensive than a residential rehab program for mental health.

A partial hospitalization program requires more visits and counseling sessions each week than an intensive outpatient program. In most partial hospitalization programs, the therapy commitment is similar to a residential rehab; however, unlike residential or inpatient rehab, you are not required to stay on-site at the treatment center. Many PHP programs require an average of five visits each week. Each visit can range from four to eight hours, depending on your unique care needs.

Our partial hospitalization program is often an excellent step for someone who has recently completed a residential treatment program but does not feel “stable” without ongoing mental health treatment support. A PHP can help you transition from the highly supportive inpatient care environment back to your daily routine without a dramatic loss in guidance and support.

It is important to remember that PHP programs might not be suitable for everyone or for all mental health or addiction treatment needs. Partial hospitalization programs are an excellent option for someone who has recently completed a residential program, someone with mild to moderate symptoms, someone who had completed treatment before and experienced a relapse in symptoms, or someone who needs ongoing care and support to ensure a smooth transition from treatment to lasting health and wellness.

Our LA County Partial Day Program

In most cases, patients who choose our treatment center must complete a detox program first. Suppose you struggle with a dual diagnosis such as alcohol addiction and depression or an anxiety disorder. In that case, it is essential to allow your body time to cleanse itself from the effects of toxic substances before beginning a mental health therapy program.

Suppose you still struggle with cravings or other complex drug or alcohol addiction effects. In some cases, detox or prior treatment are not required, and therapy at a PHP like Peninsula Health Center can begin with a referral from your medical or mental health provider. We work closely with each person who chooses our Los Angeles partial hospitalization program to develop an appropriate course of treatment for your specific needs and goals.

At our PHP for addiction treatment in Los Angeles County, you will participate in therapy sessions up to five days each week. You will attend therapy between four and eight hours each day (20-40 hours per week) throughout the week. Some of your therapy sessions will be individual or one-to-one, and others will consist of group, family support sessions, or peer support groups like 12-step programs.
