Mindfulness is best described as a practice in being aware of your current surroundings or state of mind without judgment. Often, mindfulness is key in habit and thought change. Many mental health therapies use mindfulness, including but not limited to dialectical behavior therapy, mindfulness-based cognitive behavioral therapy, and mindfulness-based stress reduction.
Meditation, on the other hand, is a type of mindfulness practice that can take many different forms. In addiction treatment programs, mindfulness and meditation therapy sessions often occur in a group therapy setting.
During a mindfulness and meditation therapy session, a therapist may direct your group to envision a specific object or environment (e.g., a beach setting), focus on a specific feeling or sensation (e.g., “I feel calm”), focus on a mantra or phrase, or notice how your body feels from a mindful perspective. This is called a guided meditation—a meditation led by a person, video recording, or audio recording.
Like with other types of therapy at our center, all mental health professionals who hold mindfulness and meditation sessions at Peninsula Health Center are licensed mental health providers with experience treating substance use disorders and co-occurring mental health concerns.
When used alongside other types of therapy and treatment methods, mindfulness and meditation therapy can be a valuable treatment for people with substance use and dual-diagnosis disorders. Peninsula Health Center’s programs use mindfulness and meditation therapy alongside other treatments so that you or your loved one can leave our programs with a full set of skills necessary for addiction recovery. Other therapies and treatments offered by Peninsula Health Center include but aren’t limited to the following.

Peninsula Health Center offers partial hospitalization, intensive outpatient, and outpatient programs for people overcoming substance abuse and dual-diagnosis disorders. We also provide ambulatory (outpatient) detox services. Before you leave treatment, Peninsula Health Center will help you make a custom relapse prevention and aftercare plan to aid your ongoing sobriety.
The partial hospitalization program (PHP) at Peninsula Health Center involves attending treatment Monday through Friday for six hours per day. PHP is our most intensive care level, and it can be an ideal alternative to inpatient rehab for clients who do not require full-time hospitalization. Our PHP clients engage in individual therapy sessions twice per week in addition to other therapies in their treatment plan, like mindfulness and meditation therapy groups.
The intensive outpatient program (IOP) at Peninsula Health Center involves attending treatment Monday through Friday but for three hours per day rather than six. IOP clients at Peninsula Health Center get once-weekly individual therapy in addition to groups and other treatments. This can be an ideal care level for Peninsula Health clients who must balance external obligations, like work or school, with treatment.
Sober living provides a sense of community, structure, and accountability for people overcoming drug and alcohol addiction. While we are not an inpatient center, clients at Peninsula Health Center can opt to stay in sober living for the benefits it provides.
At-home or outpatient detox services can help you through the emotional and physical withdrawal symptoms that emerge during the initial stages of sobriety. In at-home detox, medications and support from staff are provided in an outpatient setting. While outpatient detox is suitable for many clients, we can refer you to inpatient detox if needed.
