The medical community now understands more about substance use disorder and how it changes brain chemistry. We know it is a mental disorder not completely unlike mental health conditions like anxiety, obsessive-compulsive disorder, personality disorders, and others.
This shift in thinking among addiction treatment providers has led to the employment of traditional types of talk therapy for those living with a substance use disorder. One of those therapeutic interventions is cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), a goal-oriented type that has been in use for decades.

The primary aim of cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) is to help clients recognize the connections between their behaviors and their thoughts. In many cases, people with substance use disorder misuse substances because they feel it is the only way to manage intense feelings and emotions. These feelings and emotions are often the result of unhelpful or untrue thought patterns—lies we tell ourselves. Therapists often refer to these untrue thought patterns as cognitive distortions.
CBT first helps clients recognize cognitive distortions and their connections with substance use. Over time, clients can stop these thought patterns before they lead to unhealthy behaviors. There are a few strategies therapists can equip clients with to help them challenge cognitive distortions. Clients often find these emotional management strategies easier the more they practice them.
Cognitive behavioral therapy can be used, with success, to combat the symptoms of numerous mental health conditions, including:
You do not need to have been formally diagnosed with a mental illness to receive or benefit from CBT. Relationship challenges, work turmoil, interpersonal difficulties, grief, and other major life events can cause a great amount of stress. Tactics learned from CBT can help you manage this stress.

Cognitive behavioral therapy can help clients with substance use disorder by helping them recognize common threads between substance cravings and their feelings. For instance, someone who feels distressed before or after talking to toxic family members might feel like using drugs or alcohol to manage the stress. Instead of self-talk that consists of purely negative content, clients may learn not to become overly concerned about other people’s actions. Focusing on what you CAN control is a cornerstone of successful coping strategies learned from CBT.
The caring team at Peninsula Health Center has deep experience using CBT to help clients with substance use disorder and other mental health conditions. We’re committed to helping find the right treatment so you can reach your sobriety goals. While cognitive behavioral therapy has had its fair share of successes over the years, it is far from the only therapeutic intervention our staff uses. Many, if not most, of our clients thrive after receiving multiple types of therapy and, occasionally, psychiatric medications.
Some of the therapeutic modalities our staff is trained in besides CBT are:
Some of these interventions, such as yoga and meditation, are best when acting as complements to other types of therapy. It may take some trial and error to find the optimal therapeutic combination, as each client has unique circumstances. Your personalized treatment plan can only be developed after close supervision and multiple conversations with our well-trained staff.
Peninsula Health Center has helped transform the lives of countless clients, and we’ve encountered addictions with almost every habit-forming substance. We can treat you if you are addicted to one or more of the following substances:
One of the unique offerings at our facility is outpatient detox, sometimes referred to as home detox. Instead of undergoing detoxification of a substance at an inpatient facility, we can help you manage withdrawal from the comfort of your own home. We provide meticulous details and extremely close medical supervision during this process and can guide you to the next level of care appropriate for your situation.
After outpatient detox, our staff can help arrange inpatient services for you to continue your recovery journey. Inpatient care involves overnight stays and round-the-clock monitoring, which is needed for many people. Many others find success with outpatient treatment, which allows clients to return home at the end of the day. Not every outpatient program is alike, though.
The partial hospitalization program (PHP) is the outpatient tier that requires the most time and energy from clients. Clients in our PHP usually spend at least 20 hours per week at our facility receiving therapy, speaking with medical doctors, and otherwise receiving crucial sobriety support.
Less time-intensive than our PHP but more so than our regular outpatient treatment, the IOP usually requires 12-20 hours of treatment per week. This flexibility allows many people to continue working jobs during IOP care. Clients who find success with our IOP usually have supportive and stable home environments to aid in recovery.
Clients who need ongoing care but whose substance use disorder is mild might be a good fit for Peninsula Health Center’s routine, or regular, outpatient program. These clients don’t usually spend more than a few hours per week at our facility receiving group or individual therapy. The regular outpatient tier often allows clients to work full-time jobs and spend as much time as they’d like with loved ones.
Substance use disorder is a chronic condition. This requires some amount of treatment for the rest of clients’ lives. Aftercare specifics vary based on each client’s needs and situation, which is why our staff begins arranging resources as soon as possible. Some clients might need sober living, while others can thrive with regular therapy. Other aftercare needs might include 12-step programs, informal support groups, financial assistance, or legal help.
