Holistic Drug Rehab in California

Traditional medicine, in the sense that we are all familiar with it, has been around for centuries. In fact, there is evidence that some of the modern practices utilized by providers in hospitals and doctors’ offices today were used in ancient Egypt several millennia ago. Traditional medicine has a long-standing background, but holistic (or alternative) medicine is far from new. The history of holistic medicinal practice goes back well over 5000 years, long before traditional medicinal practices came into the picture.

Holistic therapies can be used alone or in conjunction with traditional western medicine to help alleviate many common symptoms associated with various chronic conditions. Herbal medicine, aromatherapy, acupuncture, reiki, and chiropractic medicine are all considered forms of holistic or alternative medicine.

A Path to Healing

What is Holistic Addiction Treatment?

Due to the unique and highly individualized nature of drug and alcohol addiction, studies have shown that utilizing holistic (alternative) treatment methods in combination with traditional therapy models provides a greater opportunity for positive overall treatment outcomes. Most holistic treatment methods are not considered a substitute for conventional addiction treatment therapy.

However, when holistic methods are incorporated into an evidence-based and comprehensive treatment plan, it helps to ensure a more holistic approach overall. Depending on the treatment center and its offered services and benefits, alternative therapies such as acupuncture, biosound, meditation, and equine therapies are used alongside traditional treatment methods. Evidence-based practices such as cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT), individual therapy, group therapy, family therapy, and nutritional support should still be used alongside any holistic treatment.

Examples of Holistic Methods Used to Treat Substance Abuse

Holistic addiction treatment programs (techniques) are “non-medicinal” treatment models that complement traditional treatment therapies. Holistic drug rehab programs in California, like the one at Peninsula Health Center, strive to ensure your “whole person” needs are brought together as part of addiction treatment. Holistic treatments focus on the client’s overall well-being while addressing the physical and psychological symptoms of withdrawal and addiction.

Biosound Therapy

Biosound therapy uses sound, specifically vibrations, to help put your nervous system in a relaxed state. In recent years, the use of biosound therapy has increased in popularity as a treatment option for both mental health conditions and substance abuse disorders. During a biosound therapy session, you sit in a chair designed specifically for biosound therapy. While covered with a blanket, a skilled, trained biosound therapist exposes you to various vibration patterns you can see and hear. Biosound therapy is a non-narcotic and non-invasive tool for reducing the severity and impact of mental health symptoms (such as depression and anxiety) and reducing the pain and discomfort often associated with detox and withdrawal from drugs and alcohol. Biosound therapy is not an effective standalone addiction treatment. However, when combined with other evidence-based therapy models, research suggests that biosound therapy provided a symptom reduction of as much as 57% compared to pre-session levels.

Acupuncture

An increasing number of studies show that when used as a complementary treatment, acupuncture could aid in symptom relief during detox and throughout all stages of treatment. Acupuncture helps you find relief from cravings and enhances success in long-term sobriety. It is not entirely understood how acupuncture helps treat addiction. However, evidence from several studies indicates that acupuncture increases endorphin levels. Endorphins act as your body’s natural painkillers.

Equine Therapy

Studies show that equine therapy (horse therapy or equine-assisted therapy) can help those in addiction treatment develop a more positive sense of self-image. Horses are also ideal for providing vital emotional support throughout the addiction treatment. Horses are non-judgmental creatures. They will give a relationship with a human what is given to them by the human. Consequently, they can help addicts at all stages of recovery learn healthy ways to develop vital life skills such as trust, humility, patience, and communication.

Massage

During drug or alcohol detox, many people struggle with the discomfort of physical symptoms. Detox symptoms can range from mild to severe depending on your specific relationship with drugs or alcohol. Many detox symptoms translate to pain that spreads throughout the body, significantly impacting the joints and muscles. A skilled massage therapist can help ease body tension, making some aspects of the detox and recovery process less challenging to manage physically. Therapeutic massage triggers the release of specific hormones in your body that improve mood. It also helps decrease the production of another hormone, cortisol, which is linked to your body’s stress response. Massage can also stimulate various pressure points throughout the body, helping to lower blood pressure and heart rate.

Meditation and Fitness

Recovering from addiction, especially the detox and withdrawal process, can cause increased stress, reduced energy, difficulties sleeping, and significant mood changes. Although many of these symptoms begin immediately after detox, they will often last days or weeks into your treatment and recovery journey. When you participate in regular physical activity, you can benefit from improved sleep, reduced stress, improved mood, and an overall positive effect on your physical and mental health.

Meditation is another excellent way to reduce stress levels and enhance your mood. Meditation is proven to help anyone (not just those in addiction treatment and recovery). Meditation enables you to recenter your body and mind, which can be highly beneficial during any stage of therapy.

Peer Support & Life Skills

An essential element of maintaining long-term recovery is your ability to navigate your day-to-day life after your primary treatment program ends. Factors such as triggering people and situations often lead to challenges to your sobriety. When you complete addiction treatment, it usually requires lifestyle changes. These can include changes to members of your social circles. Aftercare planning, when included as part of a holistic treatment program, provides the benefit of access to programs that enhance peer support. Participating in support groups provides a safe space where you can practice essential life skills and healthy coping strategies learned in treatment.

One such consideration is whether the treatment models offered at your chosen program match your treatment needs and goals.
